What is Winterland Ice Hockey

What is the Winterland Ice Hockey?

The Winterland Ice Hockey Program is an Instructional hockey program for people of all ages.   From the founding days back in the 1960's, Winterland has grown to now offer Instructional ice hockey programs for skaters from 6 years old to adults.

We offer Learn to Play programs for kids and adults plus promote special events and travel programs so kids and adults of all ages can live their dreams of playing hockey.

Our trips to Toronto and Windsor, Canada offer kids the chance to not only travel but to play in Canada.

Our JR. Blues Learn to Play for 9 to 15 year old's offers older kids the chance to start playing hockey at their own skill level.  Our Adult Learn to Play and Adult Goalie Learn to Play give adults the opportunity to experience what the kids have known for years that hockey is a game just for fun.

Our summer program for Squirts, Peewees, and Bantams runs from late April until the middle of July.  It was  developed by certified coaches to give children, from any youth hockey organization, the chance to skate once a week during the summer.  Our program is offered to House, B, A2 and A1  level  players that want to have fun during the summer.

The program is outlined so that the one hour session will consist of 10 to 15 minutes of instruction and then 45 to 50 minutes of “pond hockey”(scrimmages).  Every year, the program also includes an instructional session with Coach Todd Brereton from Show Down Hockey.  Each sessions has a special theme:  Edge work, Shooting and Stick Handling.   We will try to schedule one session for the goalies with Bruce Racine from Racine Goalie Academy.  We will also discuss Checking for the soon-to-be 1st year Bantams.

We have classroom sessions scheduled for the kids to expand their knowledge of the game.  Two sessions will be covering Offense and Defense Positioning, One session will be on Hockey History(NHL and local) and the fourth session will be on Officiating.  Classroom sessions are meant to help the kids gain respect and knowledge of the game they love to play.

Part of the Winterland Summer Program is organizing the Annual Winterland Friendship Games for Mites, Squirt, Peewee, Bantam, and Midget age groups to have a chance to play friendship games here in town against teams from other cities.

We will also have partnered with the Mid-Missouri Tigers Youth Hockey Assn, Jefferson City Parks Dept., and the Jefferson City, Missouri Convention and Visitors Bureau to help promote the Jefferson City Friendship games in an effort to development youth hockey in the area.   Hopefully we will give kids from across the Midwest a lifetime of memories!!!!!

This summer program is "Just for Fun" but gives the kids a chance to play hockey in a relaxed atmosphere.  And most important they get to make new friends.  Over the years we have had kids participate from the St. Louis Rockets, Kirkwood Stars, Affton Americans, Chesterfield Falcons, Twin Bridges Lightning, Southern Illinois Ice Hawks, Meramec Sharks, St. Peters Spirits,  Lady Cyclones, Mid-Missouri Tigers, Springfield Spirits, Springfield Kings, and the Lady Liberty.

Our High School Development Program for years has been a great opportunity for high school skaters to skate once a week in an intense training program.  We now offer this type of program in our SquirtPLUS, PeeweePLUS, and BantamPLUS programs

The programs are offered in five age groups:  Learn to play, U8(Mites), Squirt(10U), Peewee(12U), Bantam(14U), Midgets(16U-18U) and Adults(Big Kids).

Winterland is also happy to announce that our 17U/High School "No-Check" Program will offer kids a chance to play hockey in a safe non-checking environment.

Our Mite Development program will give skaters under the age of 8 the chance to play  hockey all summer long.

Winterland offers lots of fun and the chance to make new friends.

Winterland Hockey History

The Rebirth of Winterland

The Winterland Program is named after the first Hockey School in the St. Louis area back in the 1960’s.

The Winterland Instructional League was founded by Eddie Olson and Jim Whitworth (both members of the St. Louis Amateur Ice Hockey Hall of Fame) back when youth ice hockey was just getting started in the area in the 1960’s.  They believed that all kids should have the opportunity to learn to play ice hockey no matter what skill level or financial background the kids came from.

Jim Whitworth's son, Kevin, took this idea he grew up with and has offered a similar program to kids in the St. Louis area since 2009.  Although the old Winterland rink is gone, we now call Webster Groves Ice Rink our new home.

If you want to play hockey and have tons of fun - Winterland is the place.
