What is Winterland Ice Hockey

Special Thanks to our partners for their

help and support!!

What is the Winterland Ice Hockey Summer Program for Squirts, Peewees and Bantams?

The Winterland Ice Hockey Summer Program is a 11 to 12 week program that runs from May until the middle of July.  It was  developed by certified coaches to give children,  from any youth hockey organization, the chance to skate once a week during the summer.  We are looking for House, B, A2 and A1 level  players that want to have fun this summer.

The program is outlined so that the one hour session will consist of 10 to 15 minutes of instruction and then 45 to 50 minutes of “pond hockey”(scrimmages).  Due to the program expanding Winterland will be held at the Webster Groves Ice rink with optional ice at  Brentwood Ice Rink and Creve Couer Ice Arena.

Every year, the program also includes
an instructional session with Coach Todd Brereton from Show Down Hockey.  Each sessions has a special theme:  Edge work, Shooting and Stick Handling.   We will try to schedule one session for the goalies with Bruce Racine from Racine Goalie Academy.  We will also discuss Checking for the soon-to-be 1st year Bantams.

We have classroom sessions scheduled for the kids to expand their knowledge of the game.  Two sessions will be covering Offense and Defense Positioning, One session will be on Hockey History(NHL and local) and the fourth session will be on Officiating.  Classroom sessions are meant to help the kids gain respect and knowledge of the game they love to play.

Part of the Winterland Summer Program is organizing the Annual Winterland Friendship Games for Squirt, Peewee, and Bantam age groups to have a chance to play friendship games here in town against teams from other cities.

We will be helping The South Indy Sharks club in Indiana develop another weekend for the local Winterland kids to travel to Indianapolis to play some Friendship games.   Hopefully we will give them a lifetime of memories!!!!!

The Squirts and Peewees also get a chance to participate in the  Missouri Show Me Games tournament in Springfield, Missouri in late July.

This summer program is "Just for Fun" but gives the kids a chance to play hockey in a relaxed atmosphere.  And most important they get to make new friends.  In 2016 we had kids participate from the St. Louis Rockets, Kirkwood Stars, Affton Americans, Chesterfield Falcons, Twin Bridges Lightning, Southern Illinois Ice Hawks, Meramec Sharks, St. Peters Spirits,  Cyclones, Mid-Missouri Tigers, and the Lady Blues.

Please do not expect this to be an intense training ground for your child.   There are plenty of other summer camps and programs in
St. Louis where you can get more intense instruction. We have three of the best listed in our Private Instruction section on this web site.  We will give your child the chance to have a great time and meet new friends while playing the great game of hockey. This is not a Training Camp!!!  It is a FUN Program!!!

The 2017 programs will be offered in five age groups:  Learn to play, U8, Squirt, Peewee, Bantam, Midgets and Adults(Big Kids).

Winterland is also happy to announce that our Midget "No-Check" Program will expand to a 15 week/17 Game League.  You can read more on our web site by clicking the tab on the left.

We are going to allow but not limit it to 22 participants in each age group.(20 skaters & 2 Goalies).    The program fills up early so please register at your earliest convenience.

Winterland Hockey History

The Rebirth of Winterland

The Winterland Program is named after the first Hockey School in the St. Louis area back in the 1960’s.

The Winterland Instructional League was founded by Eddie Olson and Jim Whitworth (both members of the St. Louis Amateur Ice Hockey Hall of Fame) back when youth ice hockey was just getting started in the area in the 1960’s.  They believed that all kids should have the opportunity to learn to play ice hockey no matter what skill level or financial background the kids came from.

Jim Whitworth's son, Kevin, took this idea he grew up with and has offered a similar program to kids in the St. Louis area since 2009.  Although the old Winterland rink is gone, we now call Webster Groves Ice Rink our new home.

If you want to play hockey and have tons of fun - Winterland is the place.
